Carrick Reacts as Manchester United Suffer Late Defeat to Newcastle: “We’ve Got Everything to Play For”
Michael Carrick admitted he was “bitterly disappointed” after Manchester United suffered a dramatic late defeat to Newcastle United, but insisted his team still has plenty to fight for as the season continues.
The Red Devils were beaten in heartbreaking fashion at St James' Park after substitute Will Osula curled in a stunning 90th-minute winner to seal all three points for the Magpies.
It was a match filled with drama, especially towards the end of the first half. Newcastle had taken the lead when Anthony Gordon converted from the penalty spot, but United responded quickly through Casemiro, who rose highest to head home the equaliser.
Earlier in the half, Jacob Ramsey had been sent off, leaving Newcastle with 10 men and giving United what appeared to be a clear advantage going into the second half.
However, despite the numerical edge, United struggled to truly dominate the game or break down the hosts’ defence.
The visitors created a few chances and tested goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on several occasions, but they were unable to find a breakthrough. Just when it looked like the match would end level, Osula struck late to hand Newcastle a dramatic victory.
Speaking after the game, Carrick admitted his team failed to take advantage of the situation.
“We’re not happy with the way we played tonight. The way the game panned out, we largely had it in our hands. We felt we were in a position to kick on, but we didn’t. Credit to Newcastle, they approached the game well, but it’s bitterly disappointing for us.”
The United boss was quick to defend his players’ attitude, insisting the defeat had nothing to do with a lack of character or desire.
“It was about the quality and the performance, not the character or the will to win. It’s easy to question those things when you lose a game, but that wasn’t the problem. Newcastle deserved the win tonight, and we have to accept that.”
Despite the setback, Carrick stressed that the bigger picture remains positive for Manchester United.
“We’ve lost one game. Of course it hurts because we don’t like losing, but in the grand scheme of things we’re still in a decent position.”
United remain in the race for a UEFA Champions League spot and will now turn their attention to an important upcoming clash with Aston Villa.
Carrick said the team will treat the preparation for the next match like any other week, focusing on learning from their mistakes and improving.
“We’ve had a lot of praise lately and the players deserved it. Tonight we’re disappointed, but it doesn’t change how we approach the next game. We’ve got everything to play for. We’ll work hard, learn from this result, and look forward to the next challenge.”
