Global Music Clash Ends in Costly Defeat: Bad Bunny Seeks $456K From emPawa Africa

According to reports reaching BuzzVaultNG, Bad Bunny has asked a U.S. federal court to order emPawa Africa to pay $456,312 in legal fees after he successfully defeated a copyright lawsuit linked to one of his songs.

The legal battle was tied to “Enséñame a Bailar,” a track from his hit album Un Verano Sin Ti. The case was filed by a Nigerian producer, Dera, who claimed that the song copied elements from “Empty My Pocket” by Joeboy, an artist signed under emPawa Africa.

However, the case did not progress far in court. A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit after the plaintiff failed to meet key deadlines and did not actively pursue the case. The dismissal was based on procedural issues rather than a detailed examination of the music itself.

Following the court’s decision, Bad Bunny’s legal team moved quickly to recover the costs spent defending the lawsuit. Rather than seeking payment from the producer who filed the case, they are asking the court to hold emPawa Africa responsible, arguing that the label played a major role in funding and pushing the legal action.

The development has drawn attention across both the international and African music industries, highlighting how costly and complex copyright disputes can become, especially when they involve artists and labels from different parts of the world.

The court is now expected to decide whether emPawa Africa will be required to pay the $456,312 legal bill  a decision that could set a strong precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future.
