A disturbing video released by terrorists linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) is drawing widespread attention after it appeared to show coordinated attacks on several Nigerian military camps in Borno State.
The footage reportedly documents assaults carried out on March 5 on Nigerian Army positions in Mainok, Jakana, Marte and Konduga.
The video, which surfaced online on Sunday after being shared by Sahara reporters on X, shows armed fighters moving around what appears to be a military facility while gunfire echoes in the background. In some scenes, parts of a camp can be seen burning as the attackers fire their weapons.
Another section of the footage shows weapons, ammunition, military vehicles and dozens of motorcycles which the fighters claim were taken from Nigerian troops during the raids. The items were arranged and displayed as the group filmed them while voices speaking in Hausa and Arabic celebrated the operation.
One of the voices in the video claimed the equipment belonged to the Nigerian Army, saying their fighters had taken control of them after the attack.
Reports indicate that the assaults were carried out late Thursday night into the early hours of Friday, between about 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., when the gunmen reportedly stormed the bases in different groups.
Security sources later confirmed that the attacks led to heavy casualties among Nigerian troops. More than 40 soldiers were said to have been killed during the coordinated assaults.
Among those reportedly killed was Lieutenant Colonel S.I. Iliyasu, the Commanding Officer of the 222 Battalion, who was said to have died during the attack in Konduga.
Following the incident, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, travelled to Maiduguri to receive briefings from commanders at the theatre command headquarters.
For years, communities across Nigeria’s North-East have faced repeated attacks from extremist groups including ISWAP and Boko Haram. Despite ongoing military operations, the insurgency has continued to pose a serious security challenge, leaving thousands dead and forcing millions of people from their homes.
