Residents of Doron Baga, a quiet fishing town along the shores of Lake Chad, were thrown into panic in the early hours of Tuesday when heavily armed insurgents stormed the community in a surprise midnight attack.

The fighters, believed to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), reportedly arrived around 1:00 a.m., moving in large numbers and firing sporadically as they advanced toward the military base stationed in the town.

However, troops of the Nigerian Army quickly responded, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted for nearly three hours.

According to a security source who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, the soldiers stood their ground and eventually forced the insurgents to retreat from the town after hours of intense exchanges of gunfire.

Although the troops successfully repelled the attack, the battle came at a painful cost. One soldier lost his life during the confrontation, paying what the source described as the “supreme price” while defending the town. Five civilians were also injured in the crossfire and are currently receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries.

The latest attack came barely 24 hours after insurgents reportedly launched another assault on nearby Kukawa, a neighboring town in Borno State.

During that earlier attack, the insurgents reportedly overran a military camp, killing a commanding officer and several soldiers. Troops were said to have withdrawn temporarily as the attackers gained access to the base.

Witnesses and security sources said the militants later set several military vehicles on fire and looted weapons from the facility before fleeing the area.

The back-to-back attacks have once again highlighted the ongoing security challenges facing communities around Lake Chad and across northeastern Nigeria, where insurgent groups continue to stage deadly raids despite ongoing military operations.

For many residents in the region, the night’s gunfire and chaos served as another reminder that life in these communities remains overshadowed by the persistent threat of insurgent violence.
