President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has shared a rare insight into her nearly four decades of marriage with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, revealing that the couple have maintained peace and respect throughout their relationship.
Speaking during an interfaith breaking of fast gathering at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the First Lady said she could hardly recall a time when she and the President raised their voices at each other in almost 40 years of marriage. According to her, their relationship has been built on mutual respect, maturity, and a strong sense of faith.
Mrs. Tinubu explained that despite being in an interfaith marriage she is a Christian while the President is a Muslim their relationship has remained strong and peaceful over the years. She noted that their union shows that people from different religious backgrounds can live together in harmony if there is understanding and respect.
She told guests at the event that in nearly four decades of marriage, disagreements were handled calmly rather than through arguments. According to her, she can only remember a few occasions, if any, where their voices were raised, stressing that respect has always been the foundation of their relationship.
The First Lady made the remarks while hosting an interfaith breaking of fast event that brought together Christians and Muslims observing the ongoing Ramadan and Lenten seasons. The gathering was attended by wives of governors, female political leaders, judges, ministers, and other prominent women from across the country.
Using her personal experience as an example, Mrs. Tinubu urged Nigerians not to allow religion to divide them. She noted that many families in the country consist of people from different faiths who continue to live peacefully together. According to her, the fact that Ramadan and Lent are being observed around the same period this year should serve as a reminder of the need for unity and tolerance.
She also emphasized the importance of the fear of God in relationships and public life, saying that her relationship with anyone who does not have the fear of God rarely lasts. According to her, true wisdom and integrity come from being guided by faith and moral values.
The First Lady further encouraged women to play a stronger role in mentoring the younger generation. She said women must serve as role models by teaching discipline, integrity, and good values to young people, adding that the future of the country depends largely on how well the next generation is guided today.
Among those who attended the event were former First Lady Patience Jonathan, wives of top government officials, female lawmakers, ministers, and other notable women leaders.
By sharing her personal story, Mrs. Tinubu said she hopes Nigerians will understand that peaceful coexistence is possible regardless of religious differences, stressing that patience, respect, and faith can sustain a relationship for decades.
