Panic at Dubai Airport as Drone Strike Disrupts Flights
Travel plans were thrown into chaos on Saturday after operations at Dubai International Airport were temporarily suspended following a reported drone strike near the airport.
According to authorities in the United Arab Emirates, air defence systems were activated after an alert signaled an incoming threat near the airport’s terminals. The situation caused panic among passengers at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.
Witnesses at the airport said they suddenly heard a loud explosion in the airspace above the facility. Shortly after, a cloud of smoke was seen rising near the area, raising concerns among travelers and residents.
Passengers waiting for flights were quickly directed to move into train tunnels within the massive airport complex as a precaution while security teams assessed the situation.
Several residents across Dubai also reported hearing multiple explosions, adding to the confusion and tension across the city.
Meanwhile, Emirates confirmed that the incident forced a halt in flight operations.
In a statement, the airline said all flights to and from Dubai had been suspended until further notice. Emirates also advised passengers scheduled to travel between February 28 and March 31 to either rebook their trips or request refunds.
Authorities have since tightened security around key infrastructure across the UAE as investigations continue and officials work to determine the full details of the incident.
The disruption highlights the vulnerability of major international travel hubs and the ripple effect such incidents can have on global air travel.
