Terror Strikes Maiduguri: Multiple Suicide Bomb Blasts Rock City During Iftar

According to reports reaching BuzzVaultNG, panic gripped Maiduguri on Monday evening after multiple suicide bomb explosions hit key parts of the city during Iftar.

The explosions occurred around 7:05 p.m. on March 16, 2026, across major locations in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council  the Post Office Flyover, Monday Market axis, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH). The attacks allegedly targeted crowded areas where residents had gathered to break their fast, increasing the risk of mass casualties.

Security sources say the blasts were allegedly carried out by suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Early indications suggest a coordinated operation, with multiple bombers deployed across the city to cause widespread panic and destruction.

Police have officially confirmed that 23 persons were killed while 108 others were injured in the attacks

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, alongside the Nigeria Police EOD team and other security agencies, responded swiftly by securing and cordoning off the affected areas to prevent further harm. Their rapid intervention helped stabilize the situation.

Emergency responders, including NEMA and medical teams, evacuated victims to the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where injured persons are currently receiving treatment. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

Security has since been tightened across Maiduguri, with increased patrols, surveillance, and counter-IED operations aimed at tracking down any remaining suspects and preventing further attacks.

Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas, and report any suspicious movements or objects to security agencies.

Authorities have also extended condolences to the families of victims, assuring the public of their continued commitment to protecting lives and restoring safety.
