Two suspects arrested for allegedly impersonating officers of the Nigerian Navy in Calabar.
According to reports reaching BuzzVaultNG, the Nigerian Navy has handed over two men suspected of impersonating naval officers to the police in Calabar, Cross River State.
The suspects, David Norbert Aleji and Francis Gideon Isaac, were arrested on March 10, 2026, after they were spotted wearing military camouflage uniforms and carrying suspected fake military identity cards.
In a statement released on Monday, the spokesperson for Nigerian Navy ship Nigerian Navy Ship Victory, Lt Cdr Suleiman Bala, said preliminary investigations showed that Aleji was posing as a Lieutenant in the Nigerian Navy, while Isaac claimed to be a Midshipman.
Both men allegedly told people they were serving onboard Nigerian Navy Ship Sagbama.
Further investigations revealed that Aleji, who reportedly had some training at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria in Oron, was the mastermind of the impersonation. He allegedly recruited Isaac, who lives with him, to join the scheme.
Naval officers later searched their residence and recovered several military items, including a jungle hat and a pair of boots. The suspects reportedly confessed that they bought the uniforms and accessories themselves and also created the fake identification cards.
The Navy has now handed the two suspects over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Nigeria Police Force in Calabar for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Nigerian Navy warned that impersonating military personnel is a serious offence and urged members of the public to report such activities to the authorities. Officials also stressed that such acts damage the reputation and integrity of the service.
The suspects will remain in police custody while investigations continue.
