“Victor Osimhen Shows Humility: Why He Refused Galatasaray Captain’s Armband”
Victor Osimhen turned heads not just for his goal, but for his humility during Galatasaray’s 3-1 win over Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig.
The 27-year-old striker was offered the captain’s armband in the 79th minute after stand-in captain Lucas Torreira was substituted. Galatasaray’s regular captain Mauro Icardi, along with vice-captains Abdülkerim Bardakcı and Kaan Ayhan, were absent, leaving Torreira to lead the team.
When Ilkay Gundogan, Galatasaray’s latest midfield powerhouse and former Manchester City captain, came on, he passed the armband to Osimhen. In a surprising move, Osimhen kept it on Gundogan’s arm, showing respect for his leadership.
“İlkay is someone I deeply respect and value. He’s calm, motivating, and always there for the team. When he handed me the armband, it felt strange. I gave it back because he’s the one who should lead us,” Osimhen explained.
Just minutes later, the fans’ favourite put on another display of brilliance, scoring his 10th league goal of the season. He intercepted the goalkeeper’s pass, dribbled past him, and slotted the ball into an empty net sealing all three points for the league leaders.
Osimhen’s gesture spoke louder than words: sometimes leadership isn’t about the armband it’s about respect, teamwork, and letting the right voices guide the team.
