Health Alert: Rising Cases of Lassa fever in Nigeria
Nigeria is currently facing a serious outbreak of Lassa fever. In just 11 weeks, 146 people have died, and 582 confirmed cases have been recorded across the country.
Even more concerning, 25 doctors have been infected, and sadly 3 have lost their lives while caring for patients. This shows how dangerous the virus can be not just for the public, but also for frontline health workers.
How Lassa Fever Spreads
• Lassa fever is mainly spread through:
• Contact with urine or droppings of infected rats
• Human-to-human transmission, especially through body fluids
• Contaminated food or surfaces
Symptoms to Watch Out For
At first, it may look like a normal fever, but it can quickly become serious. Symptoms include:
• Persistent fever
• Weakness
• Swollen face
• Bleeding
• Shock (in severe cases)
How to Protect Yourself
Please take these simple precautions:
1. Cover your food and cooking pots tightly
2. Seal holes where rats can enter your home
3. Wash your hands regularly with soap
4. If you have a persistent fever, avoid self-medication go to the hospital immediately.
