In an exclusive interview, Lionel Messi opened up about the inner workings of his legendary football mind the vision and intuition that have made him one of the greatest players of all time.
On Seeing the Game Ahead
When asked about the famous observation that he “sees ahead of the game,” Messi reflected on his evolution as a player.
"My playing style changed throughout my career. I started on the wings, then moved to the center. At times, I had a lot of freedom and could move wherever I wanted. I always try to generate space, both for myself and my teammates, and to be effective either with a pass or by scoring. My main objective has always been to reach the rival’s side and attack, positioning myself well to take advantage of opportunities as they come. I can’t foresee everything, but I can observe the game, see what’s happening, and identify where we can create damage or risk it ourselves. That’s what I try to do as fast as possible."
Messi’s words offer a rare glimpse into the delicate balance between instinct and calculation. While many see the fluidity of his movement on the field as almost magical, Messi attributes it to constant awareness and a deep understanding of space and timing. Every step, pass, and run is deliberate, even if it appears spontaneous.

Visualizing Before the Match
The conversation then turned to preparation before hitting the pitch. Messi clarified that he doesn’t predict the game exactly, but visualization plays a key role.
"I don’t imagine the game fully before stepping onto the field, but I do picture certain plays or scenarios that might happen. In a match, a lot occurs spontaneously sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But imagining these situations is good practice. It helps me prepare mentally and anticipate what might unfold, even if reality doesn’t always match the plan."
This mental rehearsal is a window into Messi’s strategic approach. He doesn’t rely solely on reflex; he prepares for possibilities. It’s a mindset that allows him to react with precision, creating moments that change the course of games. Whether threading a perfect pass or finding the tiniest pocket of space to shoot, his decision-making is a blend of experience, intuition, and forward-thinking analysis.
