Confusion and tension gripped the region on Sunday night following conflicting reports about the alleged killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
International news agency Reuters and several Israeli media outlets reported that Khamenei had been killed, citing unnamed “senior” Israeli officials. The claims quickly spread across global platforms, sparking intense reactions and speculation.
However, there has been no official confirmation from Tehran.
Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera correspondent Tohid Asadi stated that Iranian authorities had not verified the reports. He noted that Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, told NBC News that “as far as I know,” Iran’s Supreme Leader and other top officials remain in good health.
Adding to the rebuttal, the head of public relations at the Supreme Leader’s office dismissed the reports as “mental warfare.” Iranian state media echoed the position, accusing Israel of attempting to destabilize the country through psychological operations.
A statement from Khamenei’s public relations office described the claims as deliberate misinformation designed to create panic and confusion.
“Asadi said this would be huge news if it turns out to be true,” but as of now, no verified evidence has emerged to support the assassination claims.
The situation remains fluid, with observers closely monitoring developments from Tehran and Tel Aviv. If confirmed, such an event would represent a seismic shift in Middle Eastern geopolitics, potentially escalating tensions between Iran and Israel to unprecedented levels.
For now, however, the story remains one of competing narratives Israeli sources alleging a major strike, and Iranian officials firmly denying it.
More updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
