CDS Olufemi Oluyede urges Borno and Yobe residents to take responsibility in the fight against insurgency
In a strong and honest message, Olufemi Oluyede is calling on the people of Borno State and Yobe State to step up and take part in the fight against insurgency.
Speaking after a high-level security meeting in Maiduguri, the Defence Chief made it clear: the battle against Boko Haram and ISWAP cannot be won by the military alone.
His message was simple but powerful the problem is closer to home than many want to admit.
According to him, intelligence gathered over the years shows that many of those behind attacks are not strangers. They are people from within the communities familiar faces, even relatives. In one recent incident in Kukawa, injured fighters were found hiding inside the village itself.
That reality, he stressed, is part of what has slowed progress in ending the insurgency.
Despite recent attacks, especially during the Ramadan period, Oluyede reassured residents that the military remains in control and is constantly adjusting its strategy. However, he warned that the nature of the threat is evolving, with insurgents now using drones and more advanced tactics.
To counter this, the military is also upgrading its approach bringing in modern surveillance tools and advanced drone technology to stay ahead.
This renewed push comes under the directive of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at strengthening coordination and ending the rising wave of violence in the North-East.
But beyond weapons and strategy, one message stood out:
lasting peace will only come when the people themselves become part of the solution.
The CDS urged residents to speak up, share information, and refuse to shield those causing harm because in a fight like this, silence can be just as dangerous as the violence itself.
