Humanity Over Religion: Jos Residents Rewarded for Saving Lives Across Faith Lines

Residents of Anguwan Rogo and Anguwan Rukuba communities in Jos have been rewarded with ₦1 million for protecting both Christians and Muslims during recent violence in Plateau State. Each community received ₦500,000 in recognition of their courage and commitment to peace.

Last Sunday, gunmen attacked Anguwan Rukuba, leaving several people dead and others trapped in the chaos. In the middle of the tension, some residents stepped in and helped rescue Muslims caught in the violence. They kept them safe until the situation calmed and later handed them over to security agencies and community leaders.

Two days later, after the curfew was relaxed, another crisis broke out in parts of Jos North. This time, Christians in Anguwan Rogo were affected. Once again, residents of the area shielded those at risk and safely handed them over to security personnel, preventing further loss of life.

Impressed by this rare display of unity, former House of Representatives member, Hon. Gwani Muhammad Adam Alkali, rewarded the communities with cash. He praised their commitment to peaceful coexistence and encouraged others to follow their example.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, community representatives said their actions were driven purely by humanity. Blessed Geoffrey from Anguwan Rukuba explained that they simply chose to protect their neighbors regardless of religion, stressing that everyone deserves safety. He added that the gesture strengthens their belief that peace is possible.

Muhammad Sulaiman from Anguwan Rogo also emphasized that humanity is greater than religious differences. He said both communities acted together because protecting life comes first, noting that they did not expect any reward but acted out of compassion and faith.

The violence in Anguwan Rukuba reportedly claimed at least 28 lives after gunmen opened fire indiscriminately before fleeing. Despite the tragedy, the actions of these residents have been widely praised as a powerful reminder that unity and compassion can prevail even in difficult times.
